Reflection #5: Importance

For this, I thought it would be a good time to connect with one of my best friends from high school again.  Throughout the past few years, we had a falling out due to me being away at school, not talking as much and just a bunch of petty things.  Upon hearing about this blog in class, I knew who I was going to call.  I decided to call Shell on Saturday night when I knew she would be home.  I could tell when she answered the phone she was worried, not knowing what I was calling for.  I explained that I was in a reflections course where we had to tell someone how much they mean to us and how we appreciate them.  Instead of waiting for a response, I just went right into telling her how much I appreciated her friendship over the years and how much she has done for me.  I didn't know how far I was supposed to go into this conversation, seeing that, I probably would have rather done most of the talking face to face.  I decided to include things that I knew she probably didn't remember, like all the pep talks we had before softball games, or all the notes we used to pass during high school.  Her reaction was something I was not expecting, frankly, I was expecting her to just be like okay, yeah, we'll hang out when you get home and all this other stuff.  Instead, after I was done with my talking, I could hear a faint cry on the other side.  This was something I was not expecting, and if you know me, I am not one to 1. Express my feelings and 2. Console someone who is crying.  I am horrible at it, and being my best friend from 8th grade till the beginning of college, she knew that.  Calling Shell was someone thing I never thought I could bring myself to do, we have tried talking things out every so often, but it ends in the same place, we say sorry, say we'll hang out and then it never happens.  This time it was something different though, maybe it was me being more open about my feelings and letting her know how I feel or just because we both were having a bad week.  Either way, I am glad I got the opportunity to call her and tell her how much she has meant to be over the years.  It truly is the little things in life that make you happy.

Reflection #4: Fiction Suit & Nostalgia

The other day, I'm walking down the street, minding my own business, listening to music.  I'm on my way home from my friends house when I have an weird feeling as if someone is following me.  My first instinct is to turn around and as I do, I see a shadow figure walking a few feet behind me.  I think nothing of it, but as I start to turn down my block, they proceed to follow me.  As I turn back again, I am pushed forward, as my phone and bag are being ripped from me.  As I am sprawled out on the grass, I look up to see another shadow figure swooping in in-front of my robber.  All I can see is the red and blue of his costume.  As I start to get up, I see Superman standing in-front of me with my belongings.  As I start to say thank you, all he responds with is, "Be Safe".

Yesterday I was on my way back to school from a weekend at home.  As always, about an hour into my drive from the suburbs, my normal radio stations turn to static.  I searched for my iPod and connected with my AUX cord, and of course the first song that comes on is "Chicken Fried" by Zac Brown Band.  My first reaction, was of course, to sing, but then a small lingering memory comes to my mind.  All I can remember is introducing this song to my best friend throughout high school, and him looking at me like I was crazy.  As I remembered this memory, or experiencing nostalgia, all I could think about was all the times that we hung out.  I started to remember all the inside jokes we had and all the movies we watched and all the weekends we hung out.  It was a nice escape from reality and from the 2 hours of driving I had ahead of me.  As this happened, as soon as I had an opportunity, I texted my friend and told him what happened.  This sparked a conversation, which in fact informed my future because this morning, I woke up to a text with a random song lyric, just like old times.

Reflection #3: Free Write

Through the readings this past week, I am learning more and more about things that I like.  Superheroes aren't really anything I talk about with my friends, but with the readings we have been given, I find myself opening up and freely talking about Superman and Batman randomly throughout the day.  I even find myself texting my friends from back home with little facts that I have read, if it's about identities of Superheroes, or how they were originally and even little facts that I already knew, I always manage to be adding one in a conversation.  Most of the time I get responses like "That's cool!" and even, "Stac, I don't care", yet, I still do it.  I feel as if finding all these little facts has made my liking for Superheroes increase.  I have always liked them, but now that I know so much more than before, it's like a have a new respect for those behind them.

Batman is my ultimate favorite Superhero, yet, I find myself starting to like Superman more and more.  Superman is "opposite" compared to most Superheroes, mainly because of his secret identity concept.  I don't remember if I have seen a Superman movie or not, but I feel like if I do watch one, I would understand more of what is happening.  Learning more about Superman gave me a different way to look at him, a new respect in a way.  He's one of those Superheroes that you're like, he's so much like us, he's boring.  In one of the articles, that was stated, how Superman is boring in a way.  I think that if you just look on the outside of the comics, you can see that.  Once you read more into his background, I don't think you have to agree that Superman is not in fact, boring at all.
